How to Remove Paint From an Aluminum Chair

Removing paint from aluminum is possible but not as easy as removing paint from other types of metal. Unlike stronger metals such as steel, aluminum can be broken down by many conventional paint thinners and removers causing permanent damage to the metal. If you do need to remove paint from an aluminum chair, the best plan is to use aircraft paint thinner which is available from most auto supply stores. This product will not weaken or destroy the aluminum in the chair.

  1. Use a paint brush to apply the paint thinner to the paint on the chair.

  2. Wearing gloves, use a metal scrubbing pad to rub the paint thinner into the aluminum chair.

  3. Rinse off the paint thinner using water. Be careful to rinse your chair off somewhere where plants and animals will not come in contact with the thinner.

  4. Repeat steps one through three until you have removed all the paint from the chair.

  5. Rinse the chair thoroughly to remove any excess paint thinner. Leaving paint thinner on the chair for a long period of time can cause damage to the chair.
