It's important when cleaning to avoid saturating the fabric with water or cleaners, as the liquid will seep down and be absorbed into the cotton. Over time, this can lead to mold, mildew or the cushions losing shape.

Things You Will Need

  • Vacuum
  • Butter knife
  • Baby wipe or 1 tbsp. liquid dish soap or 1 tbsp. upholstery shampoo
  • Soft cloth
  • Towel
  1. Attach the upholstery attachment to the vacuum hose. Place the attachment directly onto the sofa, turn the vacuum on and vacuum with long strokes. Continue until all dust and debris are removed.

  2. Unzip or remove any removable cushion covers. Launder and dry the covers, following the manufacturer's fabric care instructions.

  3. Remove any large chunks of food stuck on the couch, using a blunt butter knife to lift the object from the sofa.

  4. Rub a baby wipe directly onto any stains or spots and rub to remove them. Or, in a bowl, combine one cup of warm water with one tbsp. liquid dish soap or one tbsp. upholstery shampoo. Dip a soft cloth in the mixture and rub directly onto the stain or spot. Continue rubbing until the stain or spot is removed.

  5. Dampen a soft cloth. Dab at the spots to remove any remaining soap residue.

  6. Lay a towel over the cleaned areas. Press down to remove any excess water or moisture.
