How to Clean a Cream Carpet

Louise Lawson

Cream-colored carpet, while a popular flooring choice because of its neutral color, can be a chore to clean. The light shade of the carpet matches almost any décor, although it also shows even trace amounts of dirt and the faintest of stains.

Cream carpet should be cleaned frequently.

Clean cream carpeting at least once a month to keep it looking fresh and new. Fortunately, common household products will help break up stains and lift them from the carpet without damaging the color.

  1. Remove rugs and furniture from the room. Cream carpet is light enough to show even faint stains, so it is essential to remove furniture rather than clean around it. Pick up any large foreign objects such as piles of hair or leaves that may clog the vacuum cleaner.

  2. Vacuum the carpet. If the vacuum has a height adjustment knob, turn it to lower the vacuum as close to the carpet as possible. This will help pull out dirt ground into the carpet.

  3. Spot-treat stains with straight white vinegar. Pour enough vinegar over the stain to soak into the carpet and allow it to rest for an hour. Blot it up with a clean towel and allow to air dry. Vinegar breaks up stains and lifts them from the carpet without damaging the color.

  4. Spread a thin layer of baking soda over the stained area and brush it into the carpet with a stiff brush. Leave the baking soda on the carpet overnight and then vacuum it up. Baking soda is a natural stain and odor lifter that can be used safely on cream carpet.

  5. Use a carpet steamer for a thorough deep cleaning. Fill the steam cleaner with hot water and detergent according to the machine’s directions and run it over the carpet. Make sure you use a detergent specifically formulated for light-colored carpets. Push the machine slowly over the carpet, allowing it to pull as much liquid from the fiber as possible to prevent water stains.

  6. Tip

Clean up spills as quickly as possible to keep them from setting into the carpet. Even light-colored liquids such as apple juice can stain cream carpet.

Never use bleach to clean spills. Bleach will fade the carpet and result in a blotchy, uneven surface.
