Repairing Particle Board With Wood Filler

Cleveland Van Cecil

Because of its cost and weight, particle board is used in a lot of cheap furniture. Unfortunately, particle board is not the most durable of wood boards. One bump, or weight exerted on a shallow nail or screw, can cause the wood to break and splinter, often disintegrating the connections between wood pieces.

Particle board can be fixed with wood putty.

Fix damage to particle board by applying wood putty to the broken area.

  1. Scrape out the broken area, using an awl to remove loose particles. Don't dig too hard; particle board will fall apart if excessive pressure is used.

  2. Mix the wood putty according to instructions on the box.

  3. Apply the wood filler into the particle board using the applicator bottle that came with the putty.

  4. Allow the putty to dry for 20 to 30 minutes.

  5. Cover the patch with masking tapes on all side to protect the good wood. Sand the wood putty smooth and flush with the rest of the wood. Paint the wood putty the same color as the rest of the particle board.
