Troubleshooting RainSoft EC4

Frank Whittemore
Table of Contents

The RainSoft EC4 is a computer-controlled water conditioning system that provides filtered, soft water to a home. The system removes minerals and iron from the water, and then a brine treatment is used to regenerate the system for continued use. The EC4 system is very reliable. However, sometimes problems can occur.

These simple troubleshooting suggestions can help you to determine the best course of action.

System Does Not Regenerate

If the RainSoft EC4 system does not automatically regenerate, first check that the unit has power. It is also possible that the system is not counting gallons properly. If this occurs, contact your RainSoft representative.

System Regenerates at Incorrect Time

If you find that the RainSoft EC4 system is regenerating at the wrong time, ensure that the computer is set to the proper time. Daylight savings time can also affect the start time for regeneration. If you live in an area that observes daylight savings time, ensure that the computer is set to "On" for auto daylight savings time.

Poor Water Quality

Poor quality water is usually caused by untreated water changes. If you think the water that feeds your system has changed in quality, contact your RainSoft representative for a new water analysis. Sometimes poor water quality can be caused by leaving the bypass valve open. Check the valve and close it, if necessary.

Low Water Pressure

To check for the cause of low water pressure, open the bypass valve. If the pressure remains low, check the source of the water for proper pressure. If opening the bypass valve returns the pressure to normal, the problem is in the RainSoft EC4 system and it will need servicing.

Too Much Water in the Brine Tank or Water Is Salty

Obstructions in the drain plug, brine valve or inlet can cause too much water to accumulate in the brine tank or cause the water to become salty. Check the drain plug to see that it is draining correctly. If this does not resolve the problem, contact your RainSoft representative to clean the brine valve and clear the injector, if necessary. Also, low inlet pressure may be the problem. Have the RainSoft representative check this and adjust the pressure, as needed.

System Does Not Use Salt

Several things can cause the RainSoft EC4 system to fail to use salt. Check the drain plug for any obstructions and make sure it is draining properly. If this does not resolve the problem, the unit will need to be serviced.

Constant Flow to Drain

Constant flow to the drain can be caused by excessive water pressure. Install a pressure regulator to maintain a pressure between 20 and 50 psi. If this does not solve the problem, contact your RainSoft representative to service the unit.
