Instructions for Rain Soft Water Softener
A Rain Soft water softener is a brand of water treatment unit that is used in homes and other buildings. The purpose of a water softener is to reduce the mineral content or hardness of home water. Rain Soft water softeners use salt and filtration to fix this problem.
Operating the Rain Soft water softener system requires setting the timer for the unit to regenerate the softening unit, as well as engaging other operations controls.
Things You Will Need
- Operation manual for your model softener
- Water softener salt
Manual Models
-
Load the softener with salt to the recommended level. It is preferable to re-load the unit before the salt runs out after the first use. On some manual models solar salt is acceptable, but for most Rain Soft units block salt is recommended.
-
Pull out the 24 hour time dial. Rotate the dial until the pointer corresponds with the correct current time of day. There are two 12-hour periods on the dial representing night and day. Select the hour in the section that applies. When the pointer is at the correct time release the dial, making sure it sets back into place.
-
Adjust the hour of regeneration or the time the water softener cycles. Water softeners cycle every 24 hours to backwash the debris that has been collected from the hard water, and to recharge the filtering beads and clean them of the mineral deposits they have collected. This is done by filling the bead or mineral tank with a heavy brine solution, then the mineral tank is flushed and the used brine solution drained. You will likely want this to occur when little water is in use such as 2 a.m., as the salt content is heavier during this regeneration period. Pull up the time of regeneration dial and rotate it until the window shows the hour of the day you want it to cycle. Release the dial and make sure it seats itself back in place. If you have more than one unit do not set them to regenerate at the same time.
-
Change the salt dosage by unplugging the unit and using a ball point pen or similar object to move the salt dose pointer. Hold the dial while you move the dosage pin, until the pointer is locked in the new position. Rotate the backwash circuit timer one time until it the salt pointer is re-set, then return the power to your unit.
Computerized Units
-
Load the salt into the unit. Use the recommended type of salt for your model. Incorrect salt causes caking, build up and filtering problems.
-
Plug in the unit. The alarm will sound when the unit is first plugged in, if the power goes off or if the salt is low.
-
Open the control panel lid to access the key pad. Press the yellow "Quiet Alarm" button. The display will show an "S" for salt to indicate the timer is ready for you to set that function. Press the red "Salt" button, then press the number of pounds of salt you loaded into your container using the keypad numbers. Press "Enter." A "P" should appear in the window taking you to the next mode, present time of day.
-
Select "Time Now," which should be a red button, and press it. Input the time of day and if it is a.m. or p.m. using the keypad. Press "Enter." An "H" should appear to set the water hardness level. Press the red "Hardness" button. Your water hardness level should have been tested and given to you when the unit was installed. Enter the number on the key pad and press "Enter." A "C" should appear for capacity. Select and press "Capacity," then enter the capacity of your unit divided by 1,000. For instance if your unit capacity is 20,000 grains, press "20" and "Enter."
-
Re-load salt into your unit when the salt alarm sounds. Press "Quiet Alarm," then set the timer for the new salt quantity when added and resume normal operations.
