How to Remove Matco Toolbox Drawer Slides

Kenneth Crawford

Matco tool boxes are a popular place for home mechanics to store their tools. Matco tool boxes come with the drawers already set up in a particular order. Moving the drawers to different locations in the tool box according to personal preference may require removing drawer slides.

Removing a Matco drawer slide requires drilling out the rivets that fasten the drawer slide to the tool box. It is a good idea to install new pop rivets into the slides when reinstalling. Although the slides fit into the slots on the tool box, rivets will ensure that a slide does not move when the drawer is in place.

  1. Open the drawer and remove the contents from inside the drawer. Look for the screws securing the drawer to the sliding rail. The screws are inside the drawer on each side near the front. Remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

  2. Grasp the drawer on both sides with your hands. Place your thumbs on the slide rail alongside the drawer. Push the drawer back 1/4 inch while holding the sliding rail still. This will unlock the drawer from the rail tabs. Lift the drawer away from the tool box.

  3. Pull the moving part of the rail out as far as it will go. Look for two rivets that secure the stationary part of the slide to the tool box. One rivet is toward the front of the tool box and the other is near the center of the tool box.

  4. Drill the rivets out with a 1/4-inch drill bit. Slide the movable portion of the slide back into the tool box. Gently tap the front of the slide assembly with a hammer to disengage the tabs from the side of the tool box. Pull the slide out of the Matco tool box.
