How to Remove Outdoor Pet Odors With Home Remedies

Chris Simon

Household pets are lovable but sometimes prone to mishaps around the home. Pet urine and feces odors occasionally waft indoors from the garden or yard, no matter how much you clean up. Odor removal with ammonia should be avoided as the scent will only attract the pet back to the same spot to re-mark his territory.

Pets cause a variety of indoor and outdoor odors.

You can produce a homemade remedy to eliminate the outdoor odor using non-toxic ingredients that will not harm your pet.

Tip

Repeat the steps if the odor returns. Sprinkle some baking soda on heavily soiled areas before washing. Baking soda will soak up odors. Rinse a pet urine stain with water as soon as it happens. Water will dilute the urine and prevent strong odors.

Warning

Avoid the cleaning solution coming into contact with outdoor plants, as it may cause damage.

  1. Put on the rubber gloves and dispose of any excess pet mess outdoors.

  2. Dispose of and replace any pet bedding that emits urine, feces or vomit odors.

  3. Mix 1/2 gallon vinegar, 1/2 gallon water, 1 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide in a large cleaning bucket. Vinegar and baking soda are natural cleaners and deodorizers. Hydrogen peroxide will neutralize the smell of urine.

  4. Pour the cleaning solution on the areas where the odor is coming from.

  5. Scrub the cleaning solution into hard-surfaced areas such as concrete, wood or paved decking with a stiff-bristled yard brush. Obviously, this will not work on areas with grass or flower beds.

  6. Allow to air dry and the odor will be removed.
