How to Install a Chain Link Gate to an Existing Wood Post

Attach a chain link gate to a wooden post using specialized but readily available hinges.

Mounting a chain link fence gate onto a standing wooden gate post is a simple job, using appropriate hardware. Chain link fence gates typically require two hinges. One hinge is installed under the top rail of the gate and the other just above the bottom rail. Unlike hinges used to hang wooden gates, hinges for chain link fence gates are assembled as you hang the gate. The male portion of the hinge is first bolted to the gate post. The female portion, which accepts the hinge pin, is attached to the gate. Once installed, the gate is held in place by gravity.

1. Test fit the gate by positioning it on the gate post. Use a pencil to mark the post at the level of the bottom surface of the top rail. This will be the position of the base of the top hinge pin. Remove the gate. Use a carpenter's level to draw a vertical line down the center of the gate post. Measure and note the distance between the rails (horizontal pipes) of the gate. Subtract 4 inches from that dimension. Note the difference; this will be the distance between the bases of the top and bottom hinge pins. Transfer the dimension to the gate post to mark the position of the base of the lower hinge pin.

2. Attach the female portions of the hinges to the stile (vertical pipe) on the hinge-side of the gate by spreading the large open rings and placing them around the pipe. Thread a carriage bolt through the ends of the rings and attach a nut to each bolt. Finger-tighten the nuts. Slide the top hinge portion to the top of the stile. Turn the hinge so the smaller ring that receives the hinge pin will be facing the gate post. Use a ratchet to tighten the hinge on the stile.

3. Align the male-portion of the top hinge to the vertical line and height mark on the gate post. Mark the screw hole positions on the post. Remove the hinge. Align the male-portion of the bottom hinge to the vertical line and lower hinge height mark on the gate post. Mark the screw hole positions on the post. Remove the hinge. Drill a pilot hole through each screw-hole mark.

4. Install the male portions of the hinges on the gate, using a ratchet and lag bolts. Make sure the top hinge pin is facing upward and the bottom hinge pin is facing downward.

5. Install the gate by hanging the top female portion of the hinge on the top hinge pin. Place the lower female portion of the hinge on the lower hinge pin. Tighten the female portion of the hinge on the stile, using a ratchet.
