Cost to Install Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring comes in a variety of finishes designed to mimic the look of wood, tile and even stone.

Do-it-Yourself Installation

Although laminate is one of the least expensive types of flooring, it doesn't sacrifice performance or durability, lasting 15 to 30 years with proper care and maintenance. Homeowners can opt to install laminate flooring themselves, instead of hiring a contractor, to save on installation costs.

The cost to install laminate flooring will vary based on the type and thickness of the laminate as well as the size of the room. Laminate flooring also requires underlayment between the laminate and the floor. Some types of laminate come with attached underlayment; otherwise you will need to purchase a roll of underlayment. As of 2014, the cost of laminate flooring averages $1 to $6 per square foot. The cost of underlayment, fasteners, adhesives and surface sealants averages 32 cents per square foot as of 2014, with rolls typically sold in units of 100 square feet. It will cost an additional $50 to $66 to rent the equipment for the job.

Professional Installation

The cost to have a professional contractor install laminate flooring will vary greatly, depending on the size of the job, laminate chosen and the geographical location of the home. As of 2014, the cost to have 100 square feet of laminate installed by a contractor -- on top of the cost of materials -- averages $5 to $8 per square foot, and varies by geographic location, materials used and the contractor's materials mark-up.
