The body of a homemade post driver is a heavy-gage steel pipe measuring 2 feet long. The pipe should be 2 1/2 inches in diameter to slide easily over the top of the post.
Homemade post pounders need sturdy handles placed on each side of the pipe. The handles are shaped like a "C," with tabs at each end of the opening for attaching to the pipe. The best method for attaching the handles is welding. This will provide better holding power for the handles, without interfering with the pipe sliding up and down over the T-post.
The cap of the homemade post driver is one of the most critical elements. The cap should be heavy-duty steel, as this will impact the top of the post. A threaded or non-threaded cap may be used. It should fit snugly on the top of the pipe and be welded in place.
