How to Cut Mini Blinds

Blinds are nice decorative pieces in any home and can greatly add to the decor.

Whatever the reason -- you took the wrong measurements or ordered the incorrect size -- the blinds may not fit the window. They can be altered if you have the right tools and know how to do it. It takes a little care to cut down the blinds to the proper size and to make sure you do it correctly. .

Cut the width of the blinds with a hacksaw. Saw off the valance, head rail and slats. Take measurements and mark with a pen the spots where the valance, head rail and slats will be cut.

Remove the metal piece or the end stiffener from the end of the head rail. Saw the metal head rail on the mark you made. Twist the cut piece out of the way as you are sawing with a pair of pliers or a screwdriver. Use the pliers to move the head rail back in place. You may have to file down the edges with sandpaper if they are too jagged or rough. Replace the end stiffener back in the head rail.

Bind the blind slats together with a rubber band and cover the slats with duct tape so you don't damage them with the saw. Make sure the slats are at a even length before you cut them. Use a dull blade to cut the slats with the saw on the mark you made. Cut slowly so you do not damage the slats.

Make a line with the pencil on the valance where you'll cut it. Saw it a little under the measurements so you have room to place the metal brackets. Cut slowly with the saw so you do not damage the valance.

Replace the end stiffener in the head rail. Hang the blinds back on the wall and double-check the width to make sure it is correct.
