How to Make a Headboard Out of Foam Board

The focal point of a bedroom is most often the headboard.

And if you've shopped around for them, you'd know they aren't cheap. Making your own custom designed headboard is an inexpensive bedroom project that makes a personal statement. A crafty way to achieve this is by using foam board, an insulated poster board that is lightweight and easy to mount.

Measure the width of your bed and determine how high to make the headboard. Keep in mind that the mattress and pillows will hide most of your headboard, so you may want to add height to compensate.

Cut the foam board according to your measurements. For added interest, you can cut the foam board into different shapes. For example, a curved or arched design can soften the look of your headboard. Simply trace your top pattern onto the board and cut along the line.

To apply the batting, start by laying it over the foam board. The amount you use depends on how much padding you'd like. Once the fabric cover is applied, the batting will slightly deflate. This is something you may want to compensate for. Cut out the shape while leaving a 3-inch overhang all the way around. Staple the batting around the back edges of the board.

Once you've chosen a fabric that complements the bedroom's d├ęcor, spread it face down on a flat surface. Place the headboard on top (batting side down), and cut the fabric according to its size and shape. Leave an extra 4 inches around the edges to wrap around the back.

Staple the fabric to the back of the board to secure it. Start with the top center and then proceed to the sides. Continue stapling by section along the top and bottom edges, making sure the material is taught.

Center the headboard on the wall just above your mattress. Measure as if hanging a picture, marking corresponding spots on the wall and back of your headboard. Nail screws to the wall and pierce the marked spots on your fabric to allow for hanging. Place headboard onto screws, making sure it's flush against the wall. Once hung, you can now enjoy your decorative headboard.
