How to Remove Odors From Military Uniforms

Lucy Natek

The uniforms of men and women in the military are exposed to rough terrain and heavy conditions, so it is not uncommon for them to develop a stench that cannot be chased away by ordinary laundry detergent. If you are in charge of laundry duty of a military uniform, there may be times when the uniform will smell so bad, you will need to reach for alternative odor fighting methods.

As military uniforms are subjected to extreme conditions, you might need a little additional help when fighting the smell of sweat and hard work.
  1. Pour the hair shampoo on the sweat stain. Hair shampoo will help with removing the stain the sweat has left on the uniform.

  2. Fill your washing machine with water. Add a cup of vinegar to the water. The strong smell of vinegar will fade away, together with any type of musk your military uniform might have developed.

  3. Put a cup of baking soda in the washing machine. The combination of baking soda and vinegar is a good fighter of odors in clothes, no matter how strong they might be.

  4. Add the washing detergent. Read the label thoroughly to check for possible optical brighteners. You should only use washing detergents that don't include optical brighteners for washing military uniforms.
