How to Hang a Heavy Chinese Screen on a Wall

Chinese screens were originally made to set behind emperors' thrones. Screens were made from wood and silk to signify the emperor's authority. Today, they are used in homes of varied interior design. You can find screens made from lacquered wood, jade, ivory and metal. Because of the weight of most Chinese screens, they are generally not hung but used as a way to separate rooms. However, you can use yours as wall decoration as long as you have sturdy hanging equipment.

Step 1

Measure the width and height of your frame to find a place on the wall that can accommodate its size. Decide if you want it to support the overall theme of the room by being hung on the sides or become a focal point by being placed at the front of a room.

Step 2

Use an electronic stud finder to find your wall studs. If you hang on dry wall, you will rip a hole in the wall if you don't connect to studs. Mark with a pencil your wall studs. Drill a hole for each panel in the wall.

Step 3

Hammer two heavy-duty art hanging clips into two opposite sides of each panel. Measure each side to ensure they are even. String a piece of thick hanging wire into the clips and give it enough slack to hang.

Step 4

Take the bolt off the toggle bolt. Make sure that there is a toggle bolt to hold each panel of your Chinese screen to the wall. Have a friend hold up the Chinese frame as you wedge the wires into the toggle bolt and the wall. Push together the toggles and press them into the wall until you hear them snap or open in back of the wall.

Step 5

Turn each bolt clockwise until the bolt is flat against the wall.
