Clean the concrete or wood surface where you’re installing the tiles. Sweep up any dirt or debris from the surface, and then wash it clean using a power washer. Aim the water from the washer in a single direction, away from any building foundations. Remove any oil that may be present if installing to a concrete surface with the use of a concrete degreaser. Rinse the degreaser residue from the surface of the concrete immediately using the washer. Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding with the tile installation.
Measure the surface to be covered in tile and purchase enough tiles to cover the area plus an additional 10 percent in case it’s necessary to cut tiles for edging purposes.
Measure the sides of the surface and find the center points on each side. Use a chalk line to snap a line between the opposing sides, creating a cross at the center of the surface.
Place two crossing lines of tiles on the surface using the chalk lines as a guide, to test the best tile arrangement possible. Arrange the tiles so that as many full tiles are used in covering the surface as possible, with partial tile rows placed against a wall or evenly split at the edges of the covered surface. Mark the test placements with a piece of chalk and then remove the test tile rows.
Place five dots of adhesive about the size of a quarter on the rear of the carpet tile, one dot at each corner and one in the center. Apply the glue about 1 inch from the edges of the tiles. Place the tile at the center of the surface following the test row marks, pressing firmly to glue the tile in place. Continue on from there, placing tiles along the test marks, butted tightly together until you reach the edge.
Cut the edge tiles to fit using a utility knife. Place two dots of adhesive on the rear of the tile in the corners adjoining the other tile in the row, a center dot, and a line of adhesive along the tile edge closest to the surface edge. Press the edge tile in place.
Glue the remaining tiles in place following the same installation process until the entire surface has been covered in carpeting.
