How to Unstick a Trash Compactor

Trash compactors are an economical and convenient way to dispose of household trash.
As convenient as they are, sometimes trash compactors do not operate as they should. However, you can resolve most issues with a push of a button. This is especially true when the trash compactor door sticks and will not open. Often this is due to the ram that packs the trash not being fully raised. To unstick a trash compactor is simply a matter of identifying the cause of the sticking drawer.

Step 1

Look at the key switch to ensure that it is in the "On" position. The key switch is the turn knob on the control panel of the trash compactor.

Step 2

Press the "On" push button below the key switch, if your unit has push buttons. This will raise the ram arm completely and the drawer will open. On models that do not have push buttons, turn the key switch to the right and release. This will cause the ram arm to go up completely and the drawer will open.

Step 3

Lift the foot pedal at the bottom of the drawer to reset the unit if the "Solid Cycle" was engaged. Press the foot pedal back down to release the drawer.
