How to Level a Kenmore Washing Machine

Tanya Lee

Washing machines must be leveled in order to work correctly. A machine that is not properly leveled will vibrate and the vibrations can cause damage, including leaks. Kenmore washers have adjustable feet in the front and self-adjusting feet in the back. A quick adjustment of the feet will level the appliance.

A level and a wrench are the only tools you'll need to level your washing machine.
  1. Unplug the washing machine.

  2. Prop up the front of the washer about 4 inches from the floor with a block of wood.

  3. Screw the lock nut onto each foot of the washer. The lock nut should be at least 1 inch from the base.

  4. Screw the feet into the holes at the front corners of the washer. The lock nut should touch the bottom of the washer. Do not tighten the lock nuts.

  5. Remove the wood block from under the front of the washer and lower the washer until the feet are touching the floor.

  6. Tilt the washer forward to allow the rear, self-adjusting feet to fall into place. Lower the washer back to the floor.

  7. Place a level on the front edge of the top of the machine. If the washer is not level, adjust the feet. Raise the front of the machine and turn the foot that is lower to the left to give it more height.

  8. Lower the machine and recheck to see if it is level. Repeat steps 7 and 8 if necessary.

  9. Put the level on the right side of the machine from back to front. Confirm that the machine is level. Repeat this step on the left side of the machine. If the machine is not level from front to back, tilt the machine forward and let the rear feet readjust themselves.

  10. Use a wrench to tighten the lock nuts on the front feet tight to the cabinet of the washer.

  11. Plug the washer back in.
