How to Stop an Air Conditioner From Freezing Up
Your air conditioner moves a lot of cold air throughout the home, but freezing is not part of the process. The formation of ice crystals on the outside of your air conditioning unit is a sign that the cold air is not moving throughout the system properly. The condenser unit outside the home and the pipes leading to it are the common places where ice forms. Proper cleaning of the unit may relieve the problem, but if equipment is damaged you may need to call a service professional.
Unplug the condenser unit from the outside power source or turn the circuit breaker to the off position. Allow the ice to melt from the unit.
Turn the air conditioner back on and raise the temperature on the thermostat. Check the evaporator and air handler fan to ensure it is turned on at the same time as the compressor unit.
Remove the blower by taking off the bolts of the blower control panel, using a ratchet. Remove the bolts holding the blower in place. Clean the blades of the blower, using a soft brush, running the bristles along the fan blade to prevent bending. Replace the blower and test the unit.
Replace the filters if they are dirty, using the model number printed on the side of the filter.

- Inspect the ductwork going from the inside air conditioning unit and the compressor outside. Call in a repair technician if the ductwork is collapsed or damaged.
- If the compressor fan is running but the evaporator fan is not, call a service professional.
