How to Fix a Cracked Shower Base

Repairing cracks in a shower base does not have to cost much nor take a lot of time. It is best to repair cracks as soon as you see them rather then waiting and allowing them to get bigger. Cracks could damage the floor beneath the shower or the ceiling of the floor below if the shower is not on the ground floor. Use a few items you can purchase from most hardware and home improvement stores to fix a cracked shower base.

  1. Clean the shower base to make sure the surface is free of dirt and grime before repairing the cracks. Use tile cleaner and a scrub brush to remove the dirt.

  2. Smooth over any rough cracks, using sandpaper.

  3. Fill in the cracks with the polyester filler and smooth the filler with a putty knife. You can find polyester filler at most hardware and home improvement stores.

  4. Allow the putty to dry overnight.

  5. Add a second coat of polyester filler if the first coat doesn't completely fill the crack. Allow the second coat to dry overnight.

  6. Sand the excess filler and smooth the surface with sandpaper.

  • Wear a dust mask, work gloves and goggles to protect yourself from fiberglass dust.
