How to Clean Sneakers With a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Mr. Clean Magic Erasers are available in regular, Duo and Extra Power versions. All of these products work great for cleaning leather or leather-like sneakers. The erasers are made of a porous melamine material that removes dirt, grime and stains from most surfaces.

If your sneakers are very dirty, you may wish to use the Extra Power Eraser, which holds up a bit longer than the regular or Duo. Here is how to use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

  1. Wet the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser with clean water and then squeeze out the excess water. The eraser should be slightly damp when you use it, but not wet.

  2. Remove the shoe laces from your sneakers. Mr. Clean Magic Erasers fall apart and disappear when you are using them, much like a pencil eraser does. If you rub the eraser over the shoe laces, the eraser falls apart quicker.

  3. Test the Magic Eraser on an area of the sneaker that is not very noticeable. On some surfaces, the eraser removes, or lightens, the color. If your sneakers were white to begin with this should not be a problem. But if your sneakers are colored, a quick test to make sure it does not lift the color is a good idea. A good spot to test it on the tongue of the sneaker where it is hidden by the lace.

  4. Rub the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser gently over the entire exterior surface of the sneakers. Scrubbing is not necessary; a light rub with the product should do the job. There is no need to use soap or any other cleaner with the eraser.

  5. Continue rubbing the eraser over the sneakers until it has lifted all dirt and scuff marks. Because you are not using a lot of water, the sneakers are ready to wear as soon as you are done. You do not have to wait for them to dry.
