How to Make Shiny Paint
Children love to paint. Making the paint shiny will make it even more fun for them. Whether it is for their fingers or for use with paintbrushes, shiny paint is pretty simple to make.
Things You Will Need
- Medium saucepan
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 4 cups boiling water
- Tempera paint (powder or liquid) or food coloring
There are numerous recipes that use different thickening agents, but cornstarch is a good one to go with because it is cheap, easy to find, non-toxic, and easy to clean.
Boil 4 cups of water in a medium saucepan.
While the water is boiling, mix 1/2 cup of cornstarch with 1/2 cup of cold water in a bowl.
Add cornstarch mixture to the boiling water. Mix it in and heat to boiling and boil it for 1 minute. Remove from heat.
As the mixture is cooling, spoon about 1/2 cup of the cornstarch mixture into each bowl and add about 1 tbsp. of glycerin to each bowl. This will make the paint shiny.
Add 1 tsp. powdered tempera paint or 1 tbsp. liquid tempera paint or one or two drops of food coloring to each bowl to make the different colors. Mix thoroughly.
Wait until the paint is completely cooled before painting.
Store the paints in the refrigerator in airtight containers. You can also use jars, plastic containers and muffin tins to keep the paint in while the kids are painting.
