Latex foam mattresses are very popular for a number of reasons. They are comfortable and come in many sizes and densities.
Also, they are sturdy and long lasting. Many are not as expensive as some other kinds of mattresses, always a desirable thing to know.
What Is Latex?
Latex foam is made of the same rubber as tires, which accounts for its durability over time. There is usually a foam core of about 5 inches surrounded by more foam.
With such sturdy construction, latex mattresses can last 15 to 20 years with proper care. This kind of mattress has no springs and comes in soft, medium and firm depending on what you find most comfortable.
Latex keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer and is excellent for allergy sufferers since bacteria, mildew and mold cannot live in latex. There is both natural and synthetic latex, and most mattresses combine the two.
Latex mattresses do need to be turned from time to time. This will keep the foam even all over the surface.
When you sleep in one place for many months, it does tend to make an impression in the foam. A user’s size and weight affect how long a latex mattress will last.
Also, you should not use irons or electric blankets on these mattresses. If you use electric blankets, be sure not to place them directly on the foam, and to keep the blanket on low settings.
Your mattress cover should of course be machine washed and dried periodically.
Latex Mattress Tips
Some latex mattresses are made with different zones, which makes them softer under the shoulders and feet and firmer under the hips. Also, many are made with other materials (softer latex or memory foam, etc) layered over the latex core to give the bed a softer, bouncier feel.
If you don't want to use a box spring with a latex mattress, you can use a wooden-slat foundation sold in many stores like IKEA. These preserve the breathing activity of a latex mattress, which is important for keeping you warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather.
Keeping an open window is also a good idea in a room with a latex mattress. Most latex mattresses come with long warranties; however, it is a good idea to check on that before buying a new mattress.
