Home Remedies for Eliminating Cigarette Smoke
The smell and stains that accompany cigarette smoke are troublesome. Even if you are a smoker, you will likely not want the residue in your home. To eliminate the scent and stains of cigarette smoke, try using home remedies.
These tend to be more cost-effective and less harsh on fabrics and carpet than commercially prepared solutions.
Baking soda is one home remedy for eliminating cigarette smoke from your carpets and furniture. While the smoke itself dissipates, the scent and stains are left behind. To use on carpet, sprinkle baking soda onto the entire carpeted area. Allow it to sit on the carpet overnight. Vacuum up the baking soda in the morning. To treat upholstery, sprinkle baking soda on the furniture and allow it to sit overnight. Use a hand-held vacuum cleaner to vacuum it up. Baking powder is safe to use on most fabrics and carpets. If you are unsure, test it in a small area first.
Use vinegar to eliminate cigarette smoke and odors from your home. In each room that has the smoke and odors, set out a medium-sized bowl of vinegar and leave it out overnight. Do this for multiple nights in a row if the odors are persistent. If you know that you will be having guests over that will be smoking, or if you plan to smoke in your home, place the bows of vinegar out ahead of time.
Coffee grounds can also be used as a home remedy for cigarette smoke. They are odor-absorbing and eco-friendly. To absorb smoke odors, pour coffee grounds into coffee filters and close them with twist-ties. Place the bundles in any areas that are harboring cigarette smoke.
