How do I Insulate a Rock Wall in a Home Basement?
Your home will be kept drier if you insulate your walls, particularly your basement walls. Brick, stone and concrete can easily remain damp, so proper insulation will help reduce the amount of moisture that enters through walls made of these materials.

Things You Will Need
- Polystyrene insulation
- Styrofoam adhesive
- Seam tape
- Spray foam
- Insulation frames
- Composite decking
- Construction nails
- Nail gun / hammer
- Fiberglass insulation
Insulation also helps protect against heat being easily lost through solid walls. By ensuring heat stays trapped in, you will save money on your heating bill.
Instructions
-
Install the polystyrene insulation boards to the walls using the adhesive. Brands of polystyrene insulation varies in size. Check the label on the packaging to ensure the boards are the right fit for your basement walls.
-
Attach the joints of the insulation together using seam tape. Taping the joints helps ensure moisture and cold air doesn't seep in.
-
Seal the tops and bottoms of the insulation boards using spray foam. This will ensure there are no cracks where heat can escape or moisture can seep in.
-
Install insulation frames over the insulation boards by nailing the tops of the frames into the joists of the first floor above, and the bottoms of the frames into the floor or wall.
-
Stuff fiberglass insulation into the cavities of the wall frames.
-
Insulate the rim joists with Styrofoam board, spray foam or fiberglass insulation.
-
Install a wall surface over the completed insulation panels. The wall surface can be any material you desire.
Warning
Be prepared for hefty costs, as insulating a large basement can be expensive depending on the materials you choose to use.
