Care of Laminate Wood Floors

Laminate wood floors exist in many homes as they are priced more reasonably than authentic hardwood yet provide the same look. The laminate is actually made of compressed wood layers, then completed with a top layer of screen-printed wood that looks like the hardwood and is coated with a protective gloss layer.

Avoid the use of harsh chemicals on your laminate floor.

Things You Will Need

Laminate wood floors exist in many homes as they are priced more reasonably than authentic hardwood yet provide the same look.  The laminate is actually made of compressed wood layers, then completed with a top layer of screen-printed wood that looks like the hardwood and is coated with a protective gloss layer.

The care routine is similar as that of natural hardwood, yet a bit easier since the gloss layer seals the floor, providing you with a nonporous surface.

  1. Brush a dust mop across your laminate wood floor every few days to remove loose buildup. This is important as small pebbles and similar hard specs of buildup can scratch your laminate finish.
  2. Wipe over the laminate with a cleaning mop moistened slightly with warm water. Let your laminate air-dry, and do not walk across the floor until it has dried fully to avoid footprints.
  3. Mix 1 gallon of water with 1 cup of white vinegar in a cleaning bucket for a more thorough cleaning. The vinegar not only cleans but also contains deodorizing and disinfectant properties.
  4. Dip your cleaning mop into the cleaner, and squeeze the mop out thoroughly so you're using very little water while cleaning.
  5. Wipe the mop across your laminate, wiping in the direction of the wood laminate floor panels. Again, let air-dry and avoid foot traffic across the floor until fully dry.
