Things You Will Need

  • Acid dye powder
  • Synthrapol detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Small Pyrex bowl
  • Large cooking pot
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoon

Although their name might imply toxicity, the only acid required is plain white vinegar. Bright vivid acid dyes are available in some craft stores and from multiple online retailers.

  1. Fill a sink with 2.5-gallons of hot water. Add 1/4 tsp. of Synthrapol detergent. Soak the mesh for 45 minutes.

  2. Mix 4 tsp. of dye powder with 2 cups of boiling water in a Pyrex bowl. Stir to dissolve the dye.

  3. Pour 3.5-gallons of water into a large cooking pot and bring it to a boil. Add 11 tbsp. of white vinegar and the dissolved dye. Stir the dye bath for 30 seconds.

  4. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce it to a simmer. Wring out the mesh, and add it to the dye bath and stir for four minutes.

  5. Continue simmering the dye bath for 45 minutes, stirring every five minutes.

  6. Turn off the heat and allow the dye bath to cool down to room temperature. Pour the cooled dye bath out in the sink.

  7. Rinse the mesh with warm water, wring it out and allow it to air dry.

Warnings

All cookware and utensils used for dyeing should be reserved only for dyeing. Do not attempt to cook food with them.
