How to Tape Carpet Pad
Laying carpet in a home can be a daunting task. There are many steps involved in correctly laying down carpet that can be somewhat intimidating, especially to first-timers. Laying the carpet padding is one of the most important parts of the process and part of that procedure is taping the carpet pad.
Knowing how to tape a carpet pad can make the entire carpeting experience run more smoothly and effectively. Fortunately, with the right materials you can tape a carpet pad in your home with minimal stress or trouble.
Things You Will Need
- Seaming tape
- Scissors or utility knife
- Seaming iron
- Heavy hardcover book or rolling pin
- Duct tape (optional)
Tip
If you do not have seaming tape, heavy duty duct tape may work. Lay it underneath the carpet padding and press down the padding to attach it to the tape. Add another strip of tape on the top of the carpet padding for extra reinforcement.
-
Cut the seaming tape to fit the length of your carpet padding using sharp scissors or a sharp utility knife and make sure the adhesive side of the tape is facing upward.
-
Center the tape under the edges of two abutting pieces of carpet padding to get a sense of where they will fit, and then move the carpet padding aside.
-
Heat the seaming iron to the appropriate temperature. Heat the seaming tape by slowly and meticulously dragging the iron up and down the length of the tape.
-
Press the edges of the carpet padding firmly into the seaming tape.
-
Slide a heavy book back and forth over the carpet padding to firmly anchor the padding to the tape.
