How to Make a Cleaning Solution for Powerwashing

Debra L Turner

Powerwashers are the easiest and most effective tools you can use for quickly cleaning and removing stains from your home’s exterior, whether it has brick, siding or concrete. An effective power washing solution will not only remove stains but also kill algae and mold that may be growing on outside surfaces.

You can quickly and easily mix your own power washing solution that will do all those things at a fraction of the cost of a commercial product.

Tip

Dawn brand dish-washing detergent is recommended due to its grease-cutting properties.

  1. Pour 1 gallon of hot water into a bucket. Add the baking soda, a little at a time, stirring well with a long-handled spoon following each addition, until all baking soda has dissolved. Pour in 1 quart of household bleach and stir well. Add the dish detergent. Stir the mixture slowly and gently to avoid making suds but blend thoroughly.

  2. Fill your machine’s tank with the power washing solution. Apply it generously to sections about 12 feet square, 1 at a time, and let it set for 5 to 10 minutes.

  3. Use clean water to pressure wash the solution from the cleaned area. Rinse well so that no residue remains on the surface.
