How to Get the Yellow Out of Clear Plastic Floor Mats

Jaimie Zinski

Clear plastic floor mats are an inexpensive choice for protecting the floor of a home or an automobile. Unfortunately, these mats can easily become stained, and the stains can be quite noticeable. This includes a yellowing that can occur after years of exposure to dirt, grime and even cigarette smoke.

It is possible to remove yellow stains from clear plastic floor mats, to return them to their original color in just a single afternoon.

Tip

Replace the bleach with 3% hydrogen peroxide for a variation on the cleaning process.

  1. Remove the floor mats from their original position.

  2. Take the mats outdoors and shake them vigorously. This will remove any loose dirt and debris.

  3. Set the mat onto a flat surface in a well ventilated area.

  4. Fill a plastic bucket with one part bleach to four parts water.

  5. Wearing rubber gloves, place the plastic mat into the bucket. Press the mat down until it is completely submerged in the water.

  6. Allow the mat to remain for one hour. Remove the mats periodically to check on the progress of the whitening.

  7. Remove the mat from the bucket. Rub the mat with a sponge that has been soaked in soapy water.

  8. Rinse off the mat with a garden hose thoroughly. This will remove any remaining grime and will remove the bleach odor from the mat.

  9. Dry the mat with a soft towel.
