How to Remove Rust Marks on China

Cricket Webber

Porcelain china is a porous substance and subject to unfortunate stains. One of the most stubborn stains on any surface is rust. Rust forms on porcelain china when metal and moisture are left in contact with the china.

Older china is especially susceptible to rust stains.

You may find rust on older china that was stored improperly or on antique china that has not been used in several years. One of the easiest ways to remove rust from china is with a poultice, or chemical solution designed to draw the stain from the porous china. Make an effective poultice with common household ingredients that will remove rust from your affected china.

  1. Wet the stained china.

  2. Sprinkle baking soda directly onto the rust stain.

  3. Squeeze the juice of one-half of a lemon onto the baking soda to make a paste.

  4. Allow the baking soda and the lemon juice to sit on the stain for at least two hours.

  5. Rub gently at the stained area with a damp sponge.

  6. Wash the china with warm water and mild dish soap.

  7. Dry the cleaned china thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Tip

You can use the juice of a lime in place of a half of a lemon. If you do not have baking soda, you can use salt in its place.
