How to Repair a Stinger Bug Zapper

Cameron Easey

Bug zappers, such as a Stinger, are used outdoors to kill mosquitoes and a variety of other insects. When you hear a “zap” sound from the bug zapper, an insect has contacted the hot bulb. If your Stinger bug zapper is not working correctly, you need to find the cause of the problem.

You can then make any repairs that are necessary to get the your bug zapper working again.

Tip

Clean the metal grids in the bug zapper with a toothbrush if there are constant sparks. This indicates that there are too many bugs covering the metal grid.

  1. Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet or an extension cord. The unit is on when the bulb begins to glow blue.

  2. Unplug the unit and verify the grids are not touching each other. Readjust the position of the grids, if necessary.

  3. Release the latch that is on the bottom or base of the bug zapper and take out the plastic bulb retainer.

  4. Disconnect the old bulb from the socket by pulling it out. Insert the new bulb into the socket.

  5. Set the plastic bulb retainer back in place and then reset the latch.
