How High Should a Chandelier Be Hung?

A chandelier situated over a table or island should be hung with its base at least 30 inches from the surface of the table. If the ceiling in the room is over eight feet tall, add another three inches between the chandelier and the table for each extra foot of ceiling height.

Height Above Table

Height Above Floor

In foyers, hang the chandelier at least seven feet above the floor. If the room has especially tall ceilings, choose a larger chandelier and hang it so two-thirds of the room height is below the base of the chandelier.

Bottom Line

The proper height at which to hang a chandelier depends both on the height of the room and what is under the chandelier. Chandeliers above a table should be at least 30 inches above the table and chandeliers in open space should be at least seven feet above the floor.
