How to Dissolve Ink

Kallie Johnson

Unlike other types of stains, ink marks unfortunately cannot be removed with water and detergent--these can even cause the ink to spread. The best way to remove an ink stain is to dissolve it. Rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide can dissolve many types of inks from most surfaces including paper, fabrics, wood, carpets, tiles and counter tops. While these will successfully dissolve most of the ink, occasionally some of the stain will remain and may become permanent.

Ink stains can usually be dissolved with rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.
  1. Dip a cotton swab or the edge of a cloth in either rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.

  2. Rub the cotton swab or cloth into the ink spot or stain. Allow the rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to sit on the ink for 5 minutes.

  3. Wet a clean cloth with cool water. Wipe the ink stain or spot. Repeat the process until the ink fully dissolves.
