How to Add Wheels to Furniture
Adding wheels to a piece of furniture is one of the easiest things you can do around the house. Not only can you make a cart or bookcase mobile, you can change its entire function. This project is also perfect for furniture that has more than one use around the house--it allows you to move it into different rooms. It's simple enough that anyone can do it. Read on to learn how to add wheels to furniture.
Remove all items from the piece of furniture and set them aside. Flip it over. You need to have the bottom facing up before you can add wheels.
Sand the very bottom of the furniture with sandpaper. Medium grade would work just fine. Wipe away any remaining dust.
Drill holes on the bottom of the unit's legs. If you're using a caster with an attached shaft, then drill one hole per leg. Make sure they are the same length as the caster's shaft. If you're using wheels with a metal plate, drill in the four corresponding holes for each wheel.
Place a small amount of wood glue in each hole. For casters, push the shaft into the hole as far as it will go. If you're using wheels, place screws in all four holes. Screw until tight.
Things You Will Need
- Wheels (4) or a set of casters
- Medium grade sandpaper
- Power drill
- Wood glue
- Lay a piece of padded cloth, such as a blanket, on the floor under your piece of furniture. This will protect the floor while you're adding the wheels.
- Use eye protection and gloves when working with shop tools.
- Supervise children closely if they're working alongside you, especially around power equipment.
