How to Fix a Maytag Washer When the Cold Water Won't Stop

When the Maytag washer cold water flow will not stop, the cause is either the water level switch or the water inlet valve. The water inlet valve and switch work together to fill the tub as necessary. When one or both of these components malfunction the cold water will not shut off and could cause flooding problems. You can replace these components and have your washer working correctly again. The valve and switch are available at appliance repair facilities.

Step 1

Unplug the Maytag washer power cord from the wall outlet. Pull the washer two feet away from the rear wall. Turn the water supply valves off to the washer. Place a bucket under the water supply hose connections on the back of the washer. Disconnect the two water hoses from the back of the washer and the ends of the hoses in the bucket.

Step 2

Slip a flathead screwdriver between the front right corner of the control console and the top of the washer. Lift up on the screwdriver and push the blade to release the retaining clip connecting the control console to the washer. Repeat on the opposite corner of the control console.

Step 3

Rotate the control console back so that it sits back on the two service hinges. Disconnect the wiring harness from the lid switch connector on the right rear of the top cabinet. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the two brass clips out of the top of the washer cabinet. Tilt the cabinet forward and pull the cabinet away from the washer.

Step 4

Locate the water level switch on the left side of the control console. The switch is a large white component with a clear tube connecting to it as well as two wires. Pull the pressure hose off of the switch.

Step 5

Disconnect the wires from the terminals on the switch by pulling them off with your fingers. Lift the locking tab on the side of the switch with your finger and rotate the switch to release from the control console. Place the new switch inside the console and twist to lock the switch in position. Attach the wires to the switch and reconnect the pressure hose.

Step 6

Go to the rear of the washer and remove the single hex head screw that secures the water inlet valve to the rear washer panel with a nut driver. Disconnect the wires from the wire terminals on the water inlet valve from inside the rear panel. Use a pair of pliers to press the compression clamp to remove the hose connecting to the water inlet valve. Pull the hose straight off and set the end of the hose in the tub.

Step 7

Pull the water inlet valve out of the rear panel and slide the new water valve into position. Secure the new water valve with the single retaining screw. Attach the wires to the wire terminals on the water valve and reconnect the hose.

Step 8

Place the washer cabinet back into place over the tub and against the rear panel. Press the brass locking clips back into the holes on the top of the cabinet. Push the wiring harness back onto the door switch connector until the locking tabs lock into position.

Step 9

Flip the control console down over the top of the cabinet and press the console until the locking tabs engage. Reconnect the water supply lines to the back of the washer on the new water inlet valve. Turn the water supply valves on and check for leaks around the hose connections. Plug the washer into the wall outlet and push the washer back into its working position.
