How to Troubleshoot a Maytag Neptune That Will Not Lock

Meredith Jameson

The Maytag Neptune is a clothes washer that includes several features, such as variable wash and rinse temperatures, extra wash cycles for heavily soiled clothes, a delay wash timer and a locking mechanism to lock the washer during use. This prevents use or interruption of the machine by children or others. The lock engages automatically three minutes after a wash cycle has started and can be canceled by pressing "Start/Stop." However, if the lock does not work, you can troubleshoot a few things that may help to solve the problem.

  1. Open the washer door and inspect the drum for any items that may be preventing the door from closing properly. Remove items if the washer is overloaded.

  2. Close the door firmly so that the door switch engages. If the door is not closed completely, the lock will not turn on.

  3. Unplug the washer, wait one minute and restore power. Select a new wash cycle and press "Start" to begin.

  4. Wait at least three minutes after the start of the wash cycle for the lock to engage.

  5. Contact an authorized service professional if the lock continues to fail.
