Logs Sizes for Log Cabins

The size of the log you choose for your log home depends on a number of factors, including your budget, the style and look of the log, the manufacturer and the suitability to the climate you live in.

D-Shaped Logs

Log homes are often popular in mountainous regions where timber is readily available.
The thicker and taller the log, the more expensive it is likely to be. The colder the climate you live in, the thicker log needs to be for insulating. There are a variety of log sizes available depending on the cut style you choose and the type of timber available. .

D-shaped logs have one flat side for the home interior and one round side that makes up the home's exterior. Popular sizes of D-shaped logs include 6 inches tall by 8 inches wide, 8 inches tall by 6 inches wide, 8 inches by 8 inches and 10 inches by 10 inches.

Flat-Sided Logs

Flat-sided logs are flat on both the interior and exterior side of the log, making for smooth, flat walls on both sides. Common sizes available in flat-sided logs include 6 inches wide by 8 inches tall, 8 inches wide by 6 inches tall, 8 inches by 8 inches, 8 inches wide by 12 inches tall and 6 inches wide by 12 inches tall.

Double-Round Logs

Double-round logs have a rounded edge on both the interior and exterior sides. Like other log styles, depending on the manufacturer, double-rounds may be available in a number of sizes, including 6 inches wide by 8 inches tall, 8 inches wide by 6 inches tall, 8 inches by 8 inches, 10 inches by 10 inches and 12 inches by 12 inches.

Style and Cut

Logs used for log homes are manufactured so that each log is cut to precisely fit the logs on top and bottom of it. This is typically done by cutting a tongue and groove system that is cut into the top and bottom portion of the log. The sides of the log determine the style and height of the log.
