Pneumatic Components & Their Functions

Pneumatic equipment requires several integral components to function.  Each different component is responsible for performing a specific task in the equipment's pneumatic system.


The main components that are involved in pneumatic equipment are the tool, air compressor and the hosing.  Each component serves a different function.

Each component is essential for pneumatic equipment to function properly. 


The air compressor is the source of compressed air that a pneumatic tool is powered by.  The hosing is run from the air compressor to the equipment carrying the compressed air.

The tool manipulates the workpiece. 


Quality pneumatic hosing is resistant to crushing, cracking and abrasion, according to Canada's Center for Occupational Health and Safety.  Air compressors should be equipped with dials that allow the operator to adjust the pressure of the air that is drawn from it.


To maintain a safe work environment, each component in pneumatic equipment should be regularly checked and kept well-maintained.  Pneumatic equipment operators should wear safety equipment such as goggles and earplugs while using pneumatic equipment, according to Ask The Builder.


Pneumatic tools are lighter than similar power tools because they have no motor.  One disadvantage associated with pneumatic tools is that they require a lot of oil to use which can fly out and contaminate a workplace.
