How to Reactivate a Charcoal Filter
Charcoal filters, also known as activated charcoal, are created when the pores of charcoal are activated with oxygen, thereby opening and creating an absorbent material. Charcoal filters are used in a variety of appliances, such as refrigerators and air filters, as well for as water purification purposes.
While a charcoal filter should already be activated when purchased, reactivating the filter is possible to clean and extend the life of the filter.
Things You Will Need
- Water
- Dish washing liquid
- Dishwasher (if applicable)
- Oven
- Oven pads

Remove the filter from the appliance and wash the filter either in the dishwasher or with warm water and a few drops of dish washing liquid. Rinse the filter well.

Turn on the oven to approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit and allow the oven to preheat.

Place the filter in the oven on an oven pan. Close the oven door and leave the filter in the oven for about 10 minutes.

Remove the charcoal filter from the oven using protective oven pads and allow to cool before touching. When the filter is cool, replace the filter in the appliance.

Repeat approximately every two months or when the filter seems excessively dirty or is not functioning properly.
