How to Troubleshoot the Bissell PowerForce Bagless Vacuum

When you perform regular maintenance on your Bissell PowerForce bagless vacuum, you shouldn't have much trouble with its performance. However, every once in a while, you may experience something with the vacuum that needs checking out.

When you don't know what the problem is, you'll have to troubleshoot to find out what to do to restore the vacuum to proper working condition.


Always unplug the vacuum before performing any maintenance or troubleshooting on it.

  1. Check that the power cord is firmly plugged in if the vacuum won't turn on. If the cord is securely plugged in, check if the outlet is faulty from a blown fuse or other electrical problem.

  2. Check to see that the hose is securely attached to the suction opening when the vacuum won't pick up dirt. Another things to inspect is the hose itself to see if there are any cracks or holes in it. Check the drive belt and the rotating floor brush. The drive belt could be jammed or broken, and the rotating floor brush could be worn out or jammed with debris. Finally, see if the dirt container is full or if the filters are clogged with dust and dirt.

  3. Check the hose for cracks if the tools won't pick up dirt. Visually inspect the extension wand and the tool heads for large clogs, and pull them out with your fingers if you notice anything. Also, when the dirt container is full, the hose and tools won't work as well.

  4. Adjust the handle height or floor brush height if the vacuum is difficult to push. Using a lever on the front, switch the floor brush height to low for tile and vinyl floors and higher for carpet.

  5. Take the vacuum to the repair shop if you still cannot find the cause to the vacuum's problems. If the vacuum is still under warranty, contact the Bissell Consumer Services department at (800) 237-7691. They'll direct you to the nearest authorized service center.
