How to Align a Sagging Frigidaire Upright Refrigerator Door

Cecilia Harsch
It is important to move refrigerator magnets out of a toddler's reach.

The doors on your Frigidaire refrigerator can begin to sag with the constant opening and closing of the appliance, something that is difficult to avoid when you have children. Moving the refrigerator to retrieve small toys that inevitably find their way beneath it can cause the refrigerator to shift, resulting in misaligned doors. Sagging refrigerator doors can cause issues in the future, such as a buildup of frost inside the freezer compartment or mold in the fresh-food compartment caused by condensation. Align your sagging Frigidaire upright refrigerator door to keep the compartment cool and your food safe.

Step 1

Pull the freezer drawer open about 3 or 4 inches. Use your hands to pull up on the grill along the bottom of the refrigerator. The grill hooks into slots at the top of the anti-tip brackets at the front corners of the refrigerator. Pull the grill away from the bottom of the refrigerator to expose the adjustment screws next to the two brackets.

Step 2

Choose the adjustment screw directly beneath the door you need to adjust. Use a 3/8-inch socket and socket wrench to turn the screw to the right to raise the door; to the left to lower it. You can use a heavy-duty flathead screwdriver to turn the screw, but it may be a bit more difficult to turn it.

Step 3

Open and close the refrigerator door. Check all four sides of the door to ensure the door’s gasket touches the refrigerator cabinet. Readjust the door to correct any gaps between the door gasket and the body of the refrigerator, if necessary.

Step 4

Turn the anti-tip bolts in the brackets next to the adjustment screws to the right to lower the bolts until they touch the floor, if applicable. Reinstall the grill on the bottom of the Frigidaire refrigerator.

Step 1

Open the refrigerator door you want to adjust. Hold the door open at a 90-degree angle to the front of the refrigerator. Empty all the items from the refrigerator door shelves.

Step 2

Look beneath the door hinge for a small screw. Loosen or remove the screw from the hinge. Ask someone to support the weight of the refrigerator door while you make the adjustments.

Step 3

Look for the small cog-like washer between the bottom of the refrigerator door and the hinge. Use your fingers to turn the washer to the right to raise the door; to the left to lower it.

Step 4

Replace or tighten the small screw in the hinge after you make the adjustments to your Frigidaire refrigerator door. Replace the items you removed from the refrigerator door.

Side-By-Side Refrigerator Without Adjustable Hinges

Step 1

Close the doors on your Frigidaire upright refrigerator. Grab the right and left ends of the grill at the bottom front of the refrigerator. Pull the ends away from the refrigerator’s body until you feel the clips release the ends of the grill.

Step 2

Open the refrigerator doors as far as possible. Push downward on the top of the grill with both hands until the grill pops off the bottom of the refrigerator. Pull the grill away from the appliance to access the adjustment screws at the left and right front corners of the refrigerator.

Step 3

Find the screw directly beneath the door you need to adjust. Use a 3/8-inch socket and socket wrench to turn the screw to the right to raise the door; to the left to lower it. The screw is designed so you can use a heavy-duty flathead screwdriver, but it may be harder to turn.

Step 4

Open and close the refrigerator door. Check all sides of the door to ensure the gasket touches the cabinet. Readjust the door to correct any gaps between the gasket and the refrigerator, if necessary.

Step 5

Open the refrigerator doors as far as possible. Slide the ends of the grill over the hinges at the bottom of the refrigerator doors. Push the bottom of the grill against the refrigerator to snap the bottom of the grill onto the refrigerator, then push the top of the grill against the refrigerator until the top of the grill snaps into place. Close your refrigerator doors.

Step 3

Look on the bottom of the hinges for a small set screw next to the adjustment bolt. Remove the screw and put it in a safe place.

Step 4

Fit a 7/16-inch open-ended wrench around the adjustment bolt. Alternatively, some Frigidaire models use a 3/32-inch hex key to turn the bolt. You can see a small hex-shaped opening in the bottom of the bolt if your model can’t be adjusted with a wrench. Turn the bolt clockwise to raise the door; counterclockwise to lower it.

Step 5

Open and close the refrigerator door to ensure nothing impedes the movement of the door. Readjust the height of the door to correct the swing of the door, if necessary. Replace the set screw to stabilize the height of the door.

Step 6

Open the refrigerator doors as far as possible. Slide the ends of the grill over the hinges at the bottom of the refrigerator doors. Push the bottom of the grill against the refrigerator to snap the bottom of the grill onto the refrigerator, then push the top of the grill against the refrigerator until the top of the grill snaps into place. Close your refrigerator doors.

Top-Freezer Refrigerator

Step 1

Pry the plastic hinge cover off the top hinge of your Frigidaire upright refrigerator. Remove the cover that exposes the screws securing the hinge to the body of the appliance.

Step 2

Loosen the hex-head hinge screws, using an adjustable wrench. Shift the freezer door upward or downward until the space between the freezer and refrigerator door is even.

Step 3

Ask someone to hold the freezer door in place. Retighten the hinge screws to hold the freezer door in the new position. Snap the plastic hinge cover back onto the hinge.
