Use of Plaster of Paris With Ceramic Tiles

Erin Maurer

Plaster of paris is commonly used in sculptures or to make plastic molds. It is also useful for cleaning and repairing ceramic tiles and walls. Use plaster of paris as an adhesive to attach a towel rack and other accessories to a tile wall.

Tile Repair

Plaster of paris can be used to clean and repair tiles, or to attach towel rods and other items.

Remove broken, cracked or chipped tiles from the wall. Slather the back of a replacement tile with plaster of Paris and set it into place. Use painter's tape to hold the tile on the wall until the plaster bonds with the wall.

Mounting Accessories

Plaster of paris is an ideal medium for mounting accessory items like soap dishes, towel racks and shelving to tile walls. Drill holes into the tile, corresponding with the holes on the accessory. Fill holes in the wall and on the accessory with plaster of paris. Set the accessory against the wall and secure it with tape, suggests Ask the Builder.

Repairing Accessories

According to Natural Handyman, plaster of paris can repair towel racks or other accessories that have fallen from the walls. If the accessory was originally set in plaster, mix a new batch of plaster and fill the holes into the wall. Attach plaster to the accessory mount and tape in it place.

Cleaning

To clean porous tile, mix a small batch of plaster of paris. Add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to the mixture. The Conklin Brothers website recommends putting the paste over the stain, and covering it in plastic wrap. Allow the paste to sit for a day or two and wipe away the excess with a dry bush.
