How to Fix a Broken Door Hinge on a Maytag Dishwasher

A faulty or broken hinge on your Maytag dishwasher means that the door won't open and shut properly. This allows for water to leak from the front of the dishwasher, which renders the whole unit useless. Before you call a technician you may want to take a look at the door hinges yourself. There are quick ways to troubleshoot and fix the hinge or hinge spring.

Step 1

Power off your Maytag dishwasher and pull it out of its fixture so that you have access to the side, top and bottom panels.

Step 2

Remove the screws on the panels and remove the panels from the dishwasher. The hinges, located on the bottom corners of the dishwasher door, are now accessible.

Step 3

Check the springs that connect from the rear of the two hinges to the frame of the dishwasher. Make sure the hook on one end of the spring is connected to the latch at the back of the hinge, while the other hook is connected to the latch dishwasher frame.

Step 4

Check the hinges themselves. Notice the locking washer at the top end of each hinge. Make sure it is securely in place. If the hinge is missing a washer you can purchase a new one from a hardware store. You can use the remaining washer on the other hinge as a comparison.

Step 5

Check the bottom ends of the hinges where they connect to the dishwasher door. Most hinge problems occur when this area of the hinge separates from the door. Make sure the hooks at the ends of the hinges are attached to the latches in the door frame.

Step 6

Replace the panels on your dishwasher.
