How to Clean Cat Food Dye on the Carpet

Dry cat food, wet cat food, or cat vomit can stain the carpet. Cat food dye that gets on carpet requires special treatment to remove. Red food dye particularly requires extra effort to clean. Generally, you don't need special cleaning supplies for cat food dye. Common household cleaners usually work effectively to get rid of cat food dye stains on the carpet. You might need to repeat the treatment to thoroughly remove the stains.

  1. Mix 1 tablespoon of dish-washing liquid, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, and 2 cups of warm water.

  2. Dip a clean, white cloth in the solution, and wring it to remove excess water. Dab the damp cloth on the stain, and then blot the spot with a dry cloth. Repeat until the stain is gone.

  3. If the stain remains, dip another cloth in rubbing alcohol. Alternately dab the alcohol-soaked cloth and dry cloth on the stain.

  4. If the stain still won't go away, make another cleaning mixture. Mix 1 teaspoon of dish-washing liquid, 1 tablespoon of ammonia, and 2 cups of warm water. Use a cloth to apply this solution to the stain. Blot the stain with a dry cloth, and reapply the solution as needed.

  5. Use a cloth to apply clean water to the stain, and blot it dry.
