How Can I Get Air Freshener Smell Out of the House?

Keith Dooley

Unpleasant odors in a home are often treated with air fresheners. Available from a variety of retailers, air fresheners can take the form of a solid, liquid or spray.

Remove air freshener smell from a home with various methods.

Although air fresheners are designed to cover up unpleasant odors, the air freshener itself can prove to be unpleasant depending on the scent and the individual. Getting the unwanted smell of an air freshener out of a home can be accomplished in several ways.

  1. Remove the air freshener from the home. Dispose of slow release solid air fresheners, remove diffusing sticks and unplug heated dispersal units.

  2. Open the windows of a home to allow cross ventilation and remove the air freshener smell. Leave the windows open at least 1/4 to 1/2 way to allow fresh air to enter the home. Open windows on opposite sides of the room to create a flow through of fresh air.

  3. Spray an air neutralizing spray throughout the areas of the home where the air freshener smell persists. Concentrate the spray on tapestries and carpets that could be holding the air freshener smell.

  4. Clean the home with sanitizer. Choose a pleasant scent based on personal preference, and clean the floors, countertops and other areas. Concentrate on cleaning areas of the home where the air freshener was sprayed or located.
