How to Make a Small Bedroom Look Bigger

If it makes you feel cramped and uncomfortable, a bedroom is not the relaxing space it should be. Fortunately, changes to the decor or the room itself can make a small bedroom look larger.

Keep to light colors and multifunctional pieces for making your bedroom appear larger.

Things You Will Need

  • Light paint color
  • Storage containers
  • Mirror

If it makes you feel cramped and uncomfortable, a bedroom is not the relaxing space it should be.  Fortunately, changes to the decor or the room itself can make a small bedroom look larger.

  1. Paint your walls in a light hue. The range of colors is not necessarily limited, just make sure that it resides on the lighter end of the spectrum. Steer clear of dark colors as they will give the bedroom a closed-in look.
  2. Minimize mess and clutter to make the most visual space out of a little room. Use storage containers and utilize any closet space to get the most square footage out of a small bedroom.
  3. Keep furniture to a minimum. If a piece does not serve a purpose, eliminate it. Try to have more than one function for every piece. For example, nightstands should have drawers for holding small items.
  4. Choose the correct size of furniture. Avoid large pieces of furniture, which immediately shrink how large the room looks. However, also avoid many smaller pieces as they can clutter the space.
  5. Open your windows, when you can. The natural light creates the illusion of a much larger bedroom and the openness of the window will do the same. Keep your windows unblocked by bedroom furniture and large window treatments.
  6. Hang a mirror at eye level. Mirrors fool the eye into thinking a room is bigger than it actually is.
