How to Change the Hydraulic Filter on a JD 410 Backhoe
Hydraulic pumps and other hydraulic components need hydraulic fluid that is free from dirt and debris to operate properly. Hydraulic systems use hydraulic filters to remove contaminants from hydraulic fluid. The John Deere 410 backhoe uses a paper filter element enclosed in a steel casing.
The filter element fits inside a filter housing. Fluid travels through the filter on its way back to the hydraulic pump, so that clean fluid enters pump to circulate through the hydraulic system.
Things You Will Need
- Replacement filter
- Filter bowl seals
- Filter wrench
Turn off the hydraulic pump to depressurize the hydraulic system. The John Deere 410 backhoe uses an engine driven pump so the pump will not operate when the engine is not running.
Locate the filter housing. The John Deere 410 backhoe filter is located along the hydraulic return line. So, the filter housing will be installed after any lift cylinders or other hydraulic components.
Unscrew the filter bowl. You may need to use a special filter wrench that fits around the filter bowl.
Rock the filter element out of the filter housing, then push the new filter element into place.
Remove any seals or O-rings from the filter bowl and replace them with new seals.
Tighten the filter bowl back into the filter housing.
Start the tractor engine to operate the hydraulic pump. Check the filter bowl assembly for leaks.
Place a bucket or other container under the filter bowl to catch hydraulic fluid as the filter bowl is removed.
