How to Seal in Cat Urine on a Baseboard

Jamie Conrad

Cat owners have all dealt with the problem of cats urinating outside of the litter box at some point. When you get to the urine quickly, clean up is simple and fast. If you get to the urine after the fact, clean up can require a bit more effort. Unfortunately, if the cat urine stain happened to set into your hardwood floor or baseboard, sometimes the only remedy is to sand the stain away and reseal the wood. While this task may sound daunting, with the proper tools and information you can rid your home of cat urine stains. (See References 1 & 2.)

Sealing Cat Urine Into a Baseboard

  1. Sand away the cat urine stain with medium grit sandpaper. Wipe away the residue with a tack cloth. (See Reference 2.)

  2. Use painter's tape to outline and protect the floor and wall surrounding your baseboard. (See Reference 2.)

  3. Apply fresh paint in light strokes across the grain of the wood then apply paint in one long stroke with the grain of the wood. Allow the paint to dry. (See Reference 2.)

  4. Once the paint has dried, apply a clear sealer or varnish to the wood using a disposable foam brush. Again, work across the grain in short strokes then with the grain in long strokes for a second coat. Allow the varnish to dry. (See Reference 2.)

  5. After the varnish has dried, remove and throw away the painter's tape. (See Reference 2.)
