A Utilities Checklist for Moving

Moving can be a stressful time for the entire family. With so many things to organize, remembering which home utilities to cancel or contact with your new address can be difficult. Start a checklist to make sure you don't leave out any important utilities. This way, when you turn the key in the lock for the last time, you can be sure all the loose ends are tied up.

Electricity Provider

Use a checklist to ensure you are ready to move.

Contact your electricity provider, and inform it of your change of address. If you are moving to another state or country you may have to cancel your service. Do this approximately six weeks before your move date.

Telephone/Internet/Cable Provider

Like your electricity provider, you will need to contact your telephone, Internet and cable providers before you move. In some cases you may only have to contact one company. Contact the company approximately six weeks before your move date.

Water Provider

Change your address with your water provider. This may not be applicable to your home. Do this approximately 6 weeks before your move date.

Gas Provider

Tell your gas provider you are moving. If you do not have a gas stove or water heater, you can skip this step. Contact the provider 6 weeks before you move.


Contact your local post office to arrange for your mail to be forwarded to your new address. Do this approximately 2 weeks before you move.

Cell Phone Provider

Inform your cell phone service provider of your change of address, especially if you are moving out of the country. If you are moving within the U.S. you usually will not need to change your provider. Contact the provider approximately 2 weeks before your move, earlier if you are changing providers.
